Our planet is witnessing an unprecedented decline in biodiversity and an increase in the speed of extinction. As a response, actors in conservation and research are joining efforts worldwide to produce broader inferences — observing global trends to assess biodiversity loss and ecosystem responses to climate change and human disturbance.
The Challenge
Despite the efforts in the North African region, we still lack fundamental understanding about many taxonomic groups and ecosystems. Collaboration between researchers and conservationists has remained limited.
Our Mission
NAWCN aims to establish an effective network across North African countries — Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania — to foster scientific research in conservation, ecology, wildlife ecology and restoration.
Through collaborative initiatives, we aim to enhance our understanding of the fauna and flora of the region, reduce knowledge gaps, and produce inferences that address:
- Biodiversity loss
- Habitat fragmentation
- Human–wildlife conflicts
- Wildlife management strategies
Network Guidelines
Scientific Standards
NAWCN is oriented toward people with a scientific background in ecology or related fields, or anyone interested in wildlife conservation. While anyone can join, a certain standard of communication is maintained: assumptions, lack of evidence, misleading information, and absence of scientific argumentation are not allowed.
Not an Advocacy Group
NAWCN is not an advocacy group. We discuss sensitive topics related to wildlife, biodiversity, and human–wildlife conflict, and we propose scientifically grounded advice — but we do not make petitions or get involved as activists.
Promoting Research & Authorship
NAWCN encourages members to share their work — publications, books, communications, webinars. All outcomes produced under NAWCN collaborations respect copyright and authorship regulations.
This group is inclusive and will advance depending on members' preferences and engagement.
Whether you're a researcher, student, or conservation enthusiast in North Africa, NAWCN is a platform for sharing findings, collaborating on projects, exchanging expertise, building capacity, and contributing to regional conservation. Join us in building a stronger conservation community across North Africa.
